Some Ancestry of London's Mayor Boris Johnson by Richard Carruthers-Zurowski started 15 March 2010

The subject and I were at Oxford at the same time, and were members of the same college, but, to the best of my recollection, I do not recall ever speaking to him, though we probably exchanged pleasantries (for one thing, we weren't in the same year, nor for that matter, were we reading the same subject, or moving in the same circles.). I was, however, a member of the Oxford Union when he was president, and so got an early impression of the dry humour and studied déshabille of a brilliant man whose comedic persona I have taken the liberty of dubbing Booboo de Piffle Johnson. As a long-time reader of The Spectator, which he used to edit, I am well aware that there is far more to Boris than this droll aspect of his personality.

I was inspired to look further into his extremely varied ancestry after watching the episode on his genealogy put out by the BBC's Who Do You Think You Are? programme, which I was able to view on youtube in 2010. The original BBC version of this series is far more interesting and in-depth than either its Canadian (CBC) or American (NBC) spin-offs (there are also Australian, Irish, and South African versions). Boris's ancestry is so fascinatingly multi-faceted and so choc-a-bloc with high achievers that the programme's producers, Wall-to-Wall, could have easily produced a miniseries covering other aspects of BdPJ's lineage which includes forebears described as: Christian (Anglican, Roman Catholic, and Protestant dissenters, including the founder of the Y.M.C.A., and converts of various kinds), Jewish (including an as yet unconfirmed descent from a long line of Ashkenazic rabbis and scholars), Muslim (Sunnis, both devout and secular); folk from London (north and south of the River), England's North Country, the West Country; Americans (apparently old stock English settlers whose descendants ended up in Pennsylvania), Irish (ex-pats in France and London, as well as the domestic variety), Russian/Lithuanian, Swiss, French (including a large contingent of Indian Ocean island colonists), German, Turkish, English, Circassian; royal (British and foreign), noble (French and German, etc.), humble, yeoman, gentry; free, and slave; journalism, government, theatre, the Church, academe, pharmacy, trade (including a bankrupt); a chess champion and a royal court chamberlain, and a lot of other courtiers and military men; those born in wedlock and "naturally" as they used to say, etc.; and his children's ancestry adds their the inheritance of the East Indian/South Asian bloodlines of their mother's mother, Dip Singh.

Please note that not all my sources are included. All the information I have has been gathered via the internet, and, so far as I am aware, I am not publishing anything that is not already publicly available as I have simply reproduced, in this format, public information which any skilled and/or dogged researcher could find. I wish to thank those fellow genealogists whose work has helped me, and, of course, acknowledge a debt to the website, familysearch.org, among others. Where the names of people whose work I have drawn on do not appear, I apologise, and state that I shall work to rectify this. I invite you to contact me should you wish to discuss this article.
